Boudoir Photography – Jo-Ann

Boudoir Photography is a genre of photography that I have studied and practiced for many years, inspired by the works of Allen, Beaton, Meisel and many, many others who came before.  It fills me with pleasure when I can present to women beautiful and desirable images that illustrate their softer/sensual side.. Jo-Ann is a friend, a beautiful woman, wife and mother and she also has a career. She contacted me about a photo session and wanted to spend a couple of hours being pampered in front of the camera, in a boudoir photography session as a mini vacation from mom and career duties. We have a new double bed in the studio, so what a perfect opportunity to further my boudoir brand!…

Published in Digital Photographer Magazine

I have been a subscriber to many of UK based Imagine Publishing's magazines from Advanced Photoshop to my current favorite Digital Photographer Magazine. You can imagine how happy I was when I opened this month's Digital Photographer Issue 167 and turned to page 12 to see one of my images published within. This particular image of amateur model Melissa Ann Scott was requested for publication from my image gallery on Digital Photographer Magazine's website by one of the magazine's editors. The flower crown was constructed by my wife Sharon Akey (http://curiosnthings.com) from various flowers purchased at the dollar store. I made the dress from some tulle that I purchased at a local fabric store. The photo was captured in my…

Creative Portraits

While I don't usually wait for Halloween to do creative portraits, there is no better time of year to collaborate with people who like to get dressed up for Halloween's approach. Seeing my subjects walk into the studio mostly ready to roll fills me with inspiration. It is my hope that the images below inspire you to be creative in your photography. The most recent image in this set was photographed yesterday at ApS (Akey Photography Studio) located in Windsor, Ontario Canada. If you should have questions on how any of the images below were created, feel free to ask in the comments box. Don't forget to use the Share button and share this post with your friends and/or…

Portrait – Misty on Location

A portrait of Essex, Ontario's Misty Renaud at the Essex Train Station. Portrait Photography Portrait photography is the genre of my craft that I have practiced most. I began learning how to light people in 2003 after purchasing the first Canon "Digital Rebel" (the Canon 300D) and began working with my lovely wife Sharon. I am still learning new ways to light and capture everyday. I progressed to working with local models and have been active in model portrait photography since 2008, working with local models of all types. Being able to work well with models is especially useful when I want to try new photography or lighting techniques. Most times we get together to update our portfolios, which show samples of what we can…

Product Photography – Amiga Fossil Watch
Amiga Fossil Watch by Ray Akey

Product Photography – Amiga Fossil Watch

Product photography is a genre of photography that I have been active in for a number of years, mostly contributing to traditional stock and microstock libraries and also working with local clients when commissioned. A number of years ago when I was working overtime hours as a software developer, web designer, webmaster and general Internet support person (way too many hats) for Amiga, Inc, a Washington Corporation who purchased the trademarks and rights to the operating system that was at the forefront of multimedia computing (see the Amiga Wikipedia article for more information), I received an unexpected package at the door.  The small box said Fossil on it but gave no clues as to what the contents were or from whom…

Engagement – Danny and Mel
Engagement photography of Danny and Mel

Engagement – Danny and Mel

Engagement - Danny and Melanie Danny and Mel, a beautiful young couple, were looking for a photographer. When chance arose and Sharon recommended Ray Akey Photography as their wedding photographer, we consulted with them, showed selections from our wedding and engagement photography portfolios and agreed to do an engagement session so we could all get to know each other before the planned wedding day. If that went to everyone's liking, Ray Akey Photography would be hired as the couple's wedding photographer. We include a complimentary engagement session with our wedding packages, so all we had to do was make sure we shot what the couple wanted and we were in! We met at Muscedere Vineyards in Harrow, Ontario and…

Available Light Photography

Available Light Photography

Available Light I have been shooting predominantly with strobe/flash for most of the work I have posted on social media and portfolio sites over the last several years. Partly because I shoot stock images and love the polished look of a commercial image, but also because it was all I really practiced due to the time constraints of a day job. However, due to a recent mishap on location, I have been playing more with available light photography. Do What it Takes A while back, halfway through a shoot while working with semi-professional model Mikki Knapp at a beach along Lake Erie, shooting images for the agency she was due to see the next day, my light stand with an Alien Bees B1600, beauty…

Wedding Photography – Ava and Chris
The wedding of Chris and Ava Moor.

Wedding Photography – Ava and Chris

Ava and Chris Moor Wedding Photography | Ava and Chris Moor I have not advertised that I do wedding photography. However, our new friends Ava and Chris were referred by a mutual friend who knows my photography work very well; a friend whom I have collaborated with in the past. Ava had been searching for a wedding photographer that fit her needs. We had a consultation and found that she needed someone available short-term and didn't want a full day of photography. The wedding would be a simple ceremony with a small bridal party and select guests. Sharon and I were also welcomed to attend a small reception with wine and snacks, as guests not photographers. (I planned to…

TF and Microstock

Fashion - Jojo on pedestrian overpass Really, it's just one sale today but one of many that add up over time.. A fashion image from the same set as the one pictured of friend and model Jo-Ann CarringtonĀ sold on DepositPhotos today. The image was created on 2010-11-29 in the late afternoon, on a pedestrian overpass on Huron Church Road in Windsor, ON during a TF shoot. As I'm working on business today, I am reminded to give thanks to those who I have worked to create portfolios by way of TF or "trade for" shoots.  The "trade for" aspect is a barter of time for time and images for all parties.  What this means is no…

Studio Lighting | Alien Bees B1600 Survive Dip?

Video screenshot - See below for the actual video! A week ago, I was shooting with one of my models on a beach along Lake Erie (to be released in a future blog post) when my stand with Alien Bees B1600, Vagabond Lithium battery and a Yongnuo remote receiver fell into the lake while power was turned on. With shock and horror still on my face, I said aloud, "That can't be good.."  So, I grabbed the light stand leg, dragged it out of the water and immediately proceeded to switch everything off. Once powered down, I set everything to the side and finished our beach shoot with available light.  All in all the shoot went…
