Portrait of the Day – Katie – High ISO

A high ISO frame from my recent shoot with too pretty for words model Katie Lalonde. I usually use anywhere from 3 to 5 studio lights for much of my work.  However, this summer I am absolutely loving the challenge of these natural light shoots! I used no light modifiers on this shot and no artificial light, just a perfect exposure on a pedestrian bridge at a local park I love to shoot in around 7pm on a summer evening. In order to get a shake-free image handheld under this canopy of trees, I had to bump the ISO to 1600 for this shot. No worries, the Canon 5D Mark II has great high ISO performance and the image stabilization…

Environmental Portraits – Photographing Models

These environmental portraits are fast becoming my most favorite portraits to shoot.  Add a beautiful face, a pretty figure and a bit of fill light combined with fast glass and we have a winner! The accompanying photos are two of my personal favorites featuring Playboy model Krysta Lynn and an unnamed Windsor model/photographer. If you would like to have environmental portraits of your own or know a friend who is looking for a photographer, contact me or refer your friends and family to Ray Akey Photography at 519-562-8603

Protected: Location Portraiture

Location Portraiture with Leah Taillefer Location Portraiture with natural light is one of my favorite ways to photograph people.  Nothing is more fun than a day with a beautiful subject and not having to worry too much about balancing a bunch of lights. A meeting on location with the goal of making some beautiful images was the goal this day! Sharon and I spent a couple of hours at Point Pelee National Park with our model.  That model, a fellow photographer and model. The plan was to do some natural light portraits on location and since I knew we would do the boardwalk, I planned to shoot with natural light. It was a nice summer afternoon around…

Sierra Dupuis – Prom Day – Jackson Park

Meet my great niece Sierra Dupuis. Sharon and I met up with Sierra, sister Savannah and their mom Theresa at Jackson Park in Windsor to snap some pretty photos of Sierra in her prom dress.  5 proms in the park this day made it a bit of a challenge! We had to forego the lighting I had planned and worked with available light. We got lucky when clouds moved in to diffuse the sunlight ever so nicely. :) I posted some of these on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/akeyphoto on the day of the prom but have added a few more previously unseen prom photos with Sierra's cousin Nick Iacono.

Location Portraits – Ashley

Location portraits are a nice change of pace from my studio work.  Sometimes, I just want to grab my camera, a model and go and shoot without all the extra gear.  This was one of those days. I always look forward to working with Ashley. She is always fun and we laugh a lot.  We got together for a couple of hours to shoot on location as a change from our studio collaborations. It was a cool day but not terribly frigid. I brought a single Yonguo manual flash, a small octabox in case I wanted to add fill light in backlit situations and my camera bag with camera body and lenses suitable for portraiture and landscape photography.…

Available Light Photography

Available Light Photography

Available Light I have been shooting predominantly with strobe/flash for most of the work I have posted on social media and portfolio sites over the last several years. Partly because I shoot stock images and love the polished look of a commercial image, but also because it was all I really practiced due to the time constraints of a day job. However, due to a recent mishap on location, I have been playing more with available light photography. Do What it Takes A while back, halfway through a shoot while working with semi-professional model Mikki Knapp at a beach along Lake Erie, shooting images for the agency she was due to see the next day, my light stand with an Alien Bees B1600, beauty…

Band Photography | Destroyer at Walkerville Art Walk

Band Photography I have always loved shooting band photography, whether live or promotional/studio images but I don't often get the chance due to time restraints. Also, I am a huge Kiss fan so it was nice to hear some of my favorite Kiss songs performed live by a band that sounds pretty darn close to "You want the best, you got the best, the hottest band in the world..." -> KISS! Art and Rock in Walkerville Walkerville's Art Walk and Rock took place on July 24-25 this year. Sharon and I took a bike ride down to check out the festival which always has good food and entertainment, and an ample hepling of artistic presence with art…

Pet Portraits – Phoenix and Fawkes

Pet Portraits Remember your pets forever with a stunning portrait! We treat pets as importantly as any other portraits client. Pet portraits are a great way to have memories of our furbabies even after they are long gone! I had so much fun photographing these two fur kids! These two loveable mixed-breed Pit Bulls are full of energy and love to frolic and play. Phoenix is the lighter and elder of the two, Fawkes is the dark-faced youngster. Meet Phoenix and Fawkes! We all met up at my Commercial studio in West Windsor, Ontario and began with a short in-studio session and got some great portraits of Phoenix and Fawkes. We then moved outside to give…

Family Portraits – Tom and Jen
Family Portrait by Ray Akey Photography

Family Portraits – Tom and Jen

Tom, a friend, contacted me to inquire about a family portrait. They needed a family portrait as they only had single photos of their children. After a short consultation, we decided on a location by the bank of the river just down the street from my studio. We captured a selection of images, mostly editorial-style with a few posed photos. After the main portrait was created, we set the kids loose for me to chase around and capture some candids of them before the session ended. As I was combing through the photos, Sharon (my wife) commented that "that little guy in the hat. He's an old soul." I believe he is! :)
